The Upton Ambush, February 15 1921.By Brian Dornan On this day, in west Cork, in 1921, at least eleven people were killed in a vicious ten-minute firefight at Upton train station during the Irish War of Independence. At 10:18, on February 15, 1921, a station master at Upton station, a small isolated red-brick building on the line between Cork city and Bandon, was approached by a person he later described as “a stranger”, who asked him when the next train from Cork was in. The railway employee told him that a goods train was due in about ten minutes. “What about the passenger train?”, the man asked. That was due shortly after, he was told. The man went away, “satisfied”, but minutes later 14 armed men descended on the station, tied up the station master and made ready to fire on the incoming train. A different caliber of men from a different time. The true story of Fray Bentos! A real life Fury moment where one tank held of the German Army during the First World War in an epic Last Stand. Tank F41, named Fray Bentos, was a male Mark IV, number 2329. In August 1917 the nine man crew experienced the longest tank action of the First World War. One British tank would get stuck in the mud and after 60 hours in action, one man would die, seven wounded and countless German soldiers would lay dead around the metal beast. Their bravery saw them become the most highly decorated tank crew of the war. This is their story! Their saga began at 4:40am on the 22nd August, when they moved off in support of an attack by 61st Division near St Julien. This was part of the Third Battle of Ypres. Ruth Snyder & Judd Gray “Granite Woman and Putty Man”. Ruth Brown Snyder was a 33 year old housewife who was electrocuted in New York’s Sing Sing prison on January 12, 1928, together with her boyfriend Henry Judd Gray, a married corset salesman for the murder of her husband, Albert, on March 20, 1927 in Queen’s Village, Queens, New York. In 1915, Ruth Brown, 20, was employed as a secretary for Motor Boating magazine in Manhattan. She dreamed of marrying a wealthy man and in fact married the magazine’s art editor, 44 year old  Albert Snyder. The couple had a daughter in 1918, named Lorraine.
