Before the war, runner Janusz Kusociński was one of Poland's most popular athletes.
Born in Warsaw, Janusz started running professionally in 1928. Just a few years later in 1932, he broke two world records in long-distance running and won the gold medal in the 10,000-meter race in that year's Olympics.
After the Nazis invaded and occupied Poland in 1939, Janusz joined the Polish resistance. In March 1940, he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned.
Just a few months later, Janusz was executed at Palmiry, outside of Warsaw. He was killed as part of the AB-Aktion, a Nazi German program to murder Polish elites and intellectuals.
Janusz's story reminds us of the bravery of those who stood up to the Nazi German authorities and the brutality of the German occupation of Poland.
