Helena Hill Weed was the daughter of Ebenezer Hill, Connecticut Congressman.
Born on August 15, 1875, Helena attended Vassar and the Montana School of Mines. Helena was one of America's first female geologists. Helena and her sisters, Elise and Clara, were suffragists. Hill-Weed was a member of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage and the NWP.
Helena was one of the first women to be arrested for picketing the White House on July 4, 1917,
She was carrying a banner which read:" "Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed." Helena served three days in jail for this offense. Hill-Weed had two more arrests for suffrage activities in 1918.
Helena was a founding member of the Women's National Press Club, vice-president of the Daughters of the American Revolution and national secretary of the Haiti-Santo Domingo Independence Society. (Her essay here:,https://windowsonhaiti.com/windowsonhaiti/haiti_oc_series_09.shtml)
Helena married Walter Harvey Weed, a widower in the 1930s He was considered one of the most famous American Geologists.
Helena Hill Weed died on April 20, 1958. At the time of her death, Time Magazine described her as a "kinetic suffragette who crisscrossed the nation crusading for her right to vote."
