The Nazi regime never criminalized sexual relations between women

The Nazi regime never criminalized sexual relations between women, but some lesbians—like Henny Schermann—were arrested and sent to concentration camps as members of other victim groups.

Henny, a German Jewish woman, was arrested and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where this mug shot was taken.

According to a note on the back of the photo, she was an "unmarried shopgirl" and "licentious lesbian" who "only visited such [lesbian] bars." It also states that she refused to follow a Nazi law requiring all Jewish women to add "Sara" as a middle name on official papers.

Henny was murdered in 1942 at the Bernburg killing facility. Her mother and two siblings were also killed during the Holocaust.
